FULL NAME: Helga Hufflepuff.
AGE/DATE OF BIRTH: June 27, 973.
GENDER: Female.
SEXUAL PREFERENCE: Heterosexual.
BLOODLINE: Pureblooded.

WHY THIS CHARACTER?: She's cool. Of course. :-)

LEXICON SAYS: According to JKR's website, Hufflepuff was particularly famous for her dexterity at food-related Charms. Many recipes traditionally served at Hogwarts feasts originated with Hufflepuff (JKR). Her Famous Wizard card states that "[s]he brought people from different walks of life together to help build Hogwarts and was loved for her charming ways." (fw12). Another accomplishment of Hufflepuff's was her concern for the treatment of House-elves in the Wizarding world. She made Hogwarts a refuge for them, and as a result they were treated more kindly there than elsewhere (PC122, PC130).
...and...I don' think there's any real changes.

HISTORY: As the third child of the Count and Countess Hufflepuff, a magical couple who had lived close to the muggle community, it was decided ahead of time that she and a sizeable dowry would find their way to a nearby convent as it was the fashion of nobles to do so at that time. Despite the burgeoning troubles between muggle and wizard, she was sent to St. Glinda's at five years of age, and may have remained there if it were not for the pressure of the Hufflepuff's extended family. At the time there was increasing concerns for the girl's safety as many people knew that the girl was of magical blood, and she herself had started performing fairly innocent yet unintentional acts of magic. These unintentional acts quite soon became intentional, yet wildly uncontrolled as she was never given a wand up to that point.
At ten years of age she was retrieved by an uncle who took her to a well known wizard called Ambrosius who was to refine her magical talent. Her real growth as a witch started within her first month of having a proper wand and training as she had worked hard to refine her magical skill. She looked up to her classmates, and lived at school as many did in her time.
After leaving Ambrosius, Helga was left to her own devices for the first time in her life. She spent a year tutoring a few witches and wizards before she decided upon travelling. She travelled to various parts of the world learning the arts of various magical communities. She had found herself fascinated the Runes of Northern Europe that had been used to construct many magical objects, as well as the stars that guided the paths of the many ships she travelled upon. As time continued she had become renowned for her knowledge of Ancient Runes, Herbology and Healing, and food-related charms.
One evening a storm raged outside of a ship she was boarded on, and Helga was writing in a journal when she realized the necessity of passing along everything she knew. Perhaps it was that moment where she began to recall her past that she realized how transient life was.
She immediately wrote to Rowena, a childhood friend who became a figure within the magical community herself hoping that she would at least entertain the idea of starting a school for young witches and wizards. They soon met Godric and Salazaar, both quite gifted and full of energy and commitment to teaching the young.
After the establishment of Hogwarts, Helga found herself involved in the rights of magical beings including House Elves and goblins, and being well versed in the History of their plights, she felt that she had to do something about it. Her most proudest accomplishment was the rescue of many House Elves from their oppressive homes and relocation to Hogwarts. No one else really could've seen that one coming, except for probably Rowena who have heard her lamentations on the treatment of House Elves beforehand. But lamenting and actually carrying out an act are wildly different things.
She spent much of her free time cooking with the House Elves--just to emphasize to them that she was their equal (something that most of the Elves never really internalized), teaching them new recipes that they passed down through the ages so that most of what is cooked now at Hogwarts are recipes of her own invention. She had also taken to tutoring any students who had difficulty in her classes as she didn't see a point in leaving anyone behind.
Helga was deeply affected by Salazaar's departure. Even though he was stubborn and had principles that wildly differed from her own, Helga had to admit that at a point she had been taken by the conflicted looks in Slytherin's eyes. Of course, it never came to anything, but there is something in Helga that had the desire and need to change and fix someone who was clearly broken as Salazaar was.
For the most part, she was very busy while at Hogwarts, but one afternoon on a trip to Hogsmeade to pick up ingredients for a new recipe she was reunited with someone she had tutored in the past. Upon returning to Hogwarts she had found herself utterly inspired and had made the most delicious stew that the school was to taste that evening.
Although she was thirty at the time, she was not held back by convention and married the twenty-four year old. For whom she had a house built in Hogsmeade, that had a tunnel running to the castle. She often looked forward to returning to her home every evening after dinner in the Great Hall to find her four children (three girls and a boy). The house built for the Hufflepuffs was passed down many generations, and was later bought and used as a candy shop, Honeydukes.

After teaching at Hogwarts for over seventy years Helga retired from teaching but continued to collect and train House Elves for the kitchens from abusive homes. She died as she slept at 143, which wasn't wholly unexpected for those of wizarding descent, but at a ripe old age nonetheless.

APPEARANCE: Standing at 5'4" and being somewhat chubby, Helga most definitely is a force to be reckoned with. (OK, maybe not but if you dare call her fat, she'll get you. Badly. Really badly. Fear the badger.) She has a round, fair face with hazel eyes and curtained by light brown hair.

PERSONALITY:On first sight, Helga comes across as childish, carefree and naive, but upon further investigation she tends to be quite aware of people and their intentions. She likes to believe in the very best in people and humanity, but has the ability to see the contrary as this has presented itself to her on many occasions.
She is often a voice of reason that can go unheard, but she personally doesn't mind that. She is even fairly supportive of the endeavors of the other Founders as long as they are reasonable (no muggle slaying tonight, of course!).
There were a few times when she acted on Hogwart's behalf without the consent of the other Founders, but these tended to make things somewhat easier for them. For example her idea of collecting House Elves to man the kitchens, and instating harsh penalties against those who would dare abuse them while within Hogwarts grounds. These ideas were most definitely ahead of her time, but worked out for the benefit of everyone.
She is known for her fondness of magical creatures of all sorts and children (both are essentially the same thing...just that one bites and one doesn't...try to figure out which is which), as well as cooking.
